Electrical safety

  • Work on electrical systems and switching operations of any kind may only be carried out after prior instruction by the electrical department and by authorized groups of persons. Switch cabinets, etc., on which work is being carried out may not be left unattended during the work or must be secured against unauthorized use or reconnection.
  • In the event of special hazards, e.g. increased electrical hazard, fire or explosion hazard, electrical systems and equipment may only be used in compliance with additional regulations, e.g. ATEX, IEC, EN, VDE.

When working outdoors as well as on construction and assembly sites indoors or under special ambient conditions (wetness, humidity, dust, mechanical or chemical stress, etc.), all hand-held electrical devices must be operated from their supply point, e.g. in Germany, with a residual current circuit breaker RCD ≤ 30 mA. Regulations for the intended use must be observed.

The following five safety rules must be observed when performing electrical work:

  1. disconnect
  2. secure against restarting
  3. determine absence of voltage
  4. ground and short-circuit
  5. cover or isolate adjacent live parts
